Air Namibia appoints Chief Operating Officer

WINDHOEK, 22 OCT (NAMPA) - Air Namibia has appointed Swiss national Rene Gsponer as Chief Operating Officer for the national airline.
The appointment of Gsponer was announced by Air Namibia’s Board of Directors in a media statement availed to Nampa on Tuesday afternoon.
Gsponer is appointed to the position with effect from 04 November 2013.
According to the statement, the 50-year-old Swiss national will serve in the Air Namibia Executive Management Committee, with direct management responsibility for all Air Namibia’s flight operations, maintenance and engineering, as well as airport services functions on a global basis.
“Gsponer brings along an extensive knowledge and experience of over 27 years, in international airline industry, covering operations performance improvement and optimisation, maintenance and engineering planning, flight operations, safety, security and airline operations quality audits, on-time performance, airport hub efficiencies, strategic business leadership, business process redesign/improvement training and organisational realignment,” the statement read.
He previously served at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as a Senior Aviation
Consultant in the areas of operations, fuel and environment management from 2006 to October 2013. Other institutions where he worked include Thomas Cook AG in Frankfurt, Germany; aircraft manufacturer Fairchild Donier in Munich Germany, Gulf Air in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and Swiss Air in Switzerland.
On the educational front, Gsponer holds various educational qualifications in mechanical design and engineering, as well as industrial engineering, from different institutions in Switzerland.
“The chief operating officer is tasked with ensuring that Air Namibia develops the highest standards of operational integrity and efficiency both on the ground and in the air, with the goal of providing desired levels of customer experience, safety, security and regulatory compliance, effectively and efficiently,” the statement added.
It further said the Board of Directors, executive management, management and staff of Air Namibia look forward to a fruitful engagement with Gsponer.
