WINDHOEK, 06 FEB (NAMPA) – A 78-year-old man was one of the first riders to enter for the 15th annual Omaruru Spar Cycle Classic taking place there on Sunday.
Joseph Faul, a veteran of the Spar Cycle race, will take part in the 106 kilometre race.
This year's event was launched on Tuesday this week in Windhoek where both Spar and First National Bank's Omaruru branches announced their sponsorships of a combined N.dollars 55 000.
Event organiser Bethold Karumendo from the Directorate of Sports told Nampa from Omaruru on Friday that big teams are on their way from the coast, the northern areas of the country as well as Windhoek.
Ronja Spangenberg, who is responsible for the entries, told Nampa from Omaruru that so far 233 athletes have entered, and they expect more entries closer to the event on Sunday.
“Big names like Dan Craven from Omaruru already entered, while Yvette Mans and Petrus Loto's names also appear on the list,” she said.
The race will start at 08h00 in front of the Omaruru Spar shop.
Masters and veteran cyclists can race over distances of 25, 60 and 106 kilometres.
