Omaruru geared for 15th Omaruru Spar Cycle Race

WINDHOEK, 06 FEB (NAMPA) – Residents of Omaruru will on Sunday again hosts to the annual Omururu Spar Cycle Race.
This exciting event, now in its 15th year, was launched here on Tuesday with the handing over of N.dollars 45 000 from Omaruru Spar, and N.dolllars 10 000 from the First National Bank branch at Omaruru.
Event organiser Bethold Karumendo from the Directorate of Sports announced during the launch that no entry fees will be charged.
“We are thankful to have the Directorate of Sports on board, that will ensure our disadvantaged athletes from Oshakati, Windhoek, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay can participate by transporting them to the event,' he said.
Bobby Griebel from Omaruru Spar said the race is the longest ongoing cycling event outside Windhoek.
“The main objective is to involve the youth in sports, specifically in the sport of cycling,” Griebel said.
The race will start at 08h00 in front of the Omaruru Spar shop.
Masters and veteran cyclists can race over distances of 25, 60 and 106 kilometres.
Last year, the event drew 320 entries.
