The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund has confirmed that last night's accident brings the total number of road accident casualties to 399, 51 accounting for fatalities since the year began.
The road crashes between 22 November 2013 and 15th of this month have resulted in the highest number of deaths recorded during this period in over six years.
Last night, seven people lost their lives in a head-on collision between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo. According to MVA Fund, a bus carrying 13 Namdeb employees collided with a truck carrying dairy products and both drivers died.
Ten more people, including a baby were transported to Okahandja and Katutura State hospitals. MVA Fund got the call about the accident less than half an hour later and dispatched six ambulances to the scene to assist the victims.
Another notification about an accident that had taken place between Windhoek and Hosea Kutako Airport early this morning followed. In the latter, a truck transporting security guards swerved off the road and overturned when the driver attempted to avoid hitting a kudu and lost control.
Although there were no fatalities in the second accident, 25 people had to be treated for injuries sustained in the process.
A total of 104 people died due to road accidents during the previous festive season, the MVA Fund has said.
