ONGWEDIVA, 30 MAY (NAMPA) - A member of the district executive committee of the Swapo Party in the Oniipa Constituency of the Oshikoto Region has been suspended for allegedly threatening the party?s vice-president, Dr Hage Geingob with death.
Approached for comment on Thursday, the particular member, who asked to remain unnamed, confirmed the suspension, saying he was suspended during an urgent district executive meeting held at the party?s district office at Oniipa last Friday.
He pointed out that the Swapo district coordinator for the Oniipa, Jerry Ngwena, forcefully instructed other members of the executive committee to take a resolution which authorised the suspension.
Ngwena is said to have told members of the executive committee during the meeting last Friday that the suspended member is one of the individual Swapo-Party members threatening to kill Geingob.
This follows Geingob?s re-election as Swapo vice-president, making him the most possible successor of President Hifikepunye Pohamba after the 2014 general elections.
The 5th Swapo-Party congress, held in the country towards the end of last year, re-elected Geingob in his vice-president position.
Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture Minister Jerry Ekandjo and Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana were the two other candidates who vied for the vice-president position.
Reports of Geingob being threatened with death or harassed by yet unnamed fellow comrades are the order of the day since his re-election.
?The district coordinator (Ngwena) accused me in front of all executive committee members last Friday that I remarked at one of the cuca shops in Ondangwa that comrade Geingob will be killed before becoming the country?s president,? the suspended member explained.
He went on to say Ngwena allowed him no chance to respond to the allegations, and Ngwena has also allegedly threatened to dissolve the whole district executive committee if it failed to suspend the member in question.
The suspended member said Ngwena also warned that anybody who report the suspension to the media would be dealt with by the leadership of the party accordingly.
?I am not opposing the investigation into the death threat remarks I have allegedly made at the cuca shops, because I have not made such remarks. However, I fear for my life because he (Ngwena) told the meeting the Security Police is also part of the investigation team,? said the suspended member.
He added that Ngwena has also informed the meeting that the names of all members of the investigation team will be kept secret and will never be made known to the public.
Coordinator of the Swapo-Party in the Oshikoto Region, Armus Amukwiyu told this news agency upon enquiry Thursday afternoon his office was not aware of the suspension of the said Oniipa district executive member.
?I have not received any report from that district yet, and it is the party?s procedure that the upper structure should be informed when a member of the district is suspended,? Amukwiyu replied.
On his part, Ngwena only confirmed that investigations against the suspended member were in full swing.
?I don?t have comment on the matter at this stage, because I don?t want to jeopardise the investigations,? Ngwena said.
