OSHAKATI, 30 SEP (NAMPA) – The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture’s Oshakati Circuit in the Oshana Region held a trade expo and sports tournament at the weekend to raise funds for the construction of a community hostel at Evululuko Secondary School.
Chairperson of the fundraising committee, Johanna Nakambonde told Nampa on Sunday that the event will be held annually to assist learners who are currently living in deplorable conditions due to the absence of a hostel at their school.
“We have to start somewhere to assist children of Evululuko School and we believe the little money we generate from this event will make a difference in their lives,” she said.
She added that all 30 schools in the Oshakati Circuit had market stands during the expo, while seven football and two netball clubs participated in the event’s sports’ tournament.
The turnout of visitors or customers of the first event was promising despite the fact that the idea to hold the expo only came about last month (August) and the event could be advertised just this month,” Nakambonde pointed out.
The event’s sports organiser, Nathaniel Hafuto on Sunday raised a concern that: “We got seven out of 15 football clubs expected for the soccer competition, and only two teams could show up for the netball game.”
This, he believes is due to the late advertisement of the event which has resulted in the low turnouts of sports teams.
Big Daddy Football Club (FC) won the soccer game after defeating Shooting Stars FC 4-3 on penalties, following their 1-all draw in the final, while Via King has beaten Omuthiya 2-0 to take the third position in soccer.
Big Daddy, as the champions, took home a floating trophy and N.dollars 1 800, Shooting Stars received N.dollars 1 200 and Via King walked away with N.dollars 900.
In the netball category, Afrocat Netball Club received N.dollars 600 and a floating trophy as the winner and N.dollars 400 went to Cobra.
