WINDHOEK, 17 SEP (NAMPA) - The first edition of the Happydu annual youth volleyball tournament will take place at the Katutura Youth Complex this weekend.
The tournament starts Friday and the semi-finals and finals will take place on Saturday.
The event is organised and sponsored by the Happydu Volleyball Club, made up of youth mostly from Katutura and targets boys and girls aged 13 to 17 years.
Happydu head coach Aloisius Ishitile told Nampa a number of schools have shown interest in participating, with nine schools from Khomas and one school in the Erongo Region already having registered to take part.
He said the main aim of the tournament is to develop volleyball at youth level as the club feels youth volleyball is sidelined.
“Most people focus on senior volleyball teams but if we could focus on youth right now, we will have better volleyball players in the future,” said Ishitile, adding that the tournament is also an opportunity for young people to unite and have fun while building their volleyball careers.
Ishitile said although many players are expected to be new to the game, strict rules of play will be observed to ensure that they leave with the necessary knowledge of the rules.
He further said they struggle to find sponsors for the sports code, hence Happydu being the sole sponsor of the tournament.
Despite the lack of sponsorship, he said the growth of volleyball in the country is pleasing.
“During my short time that I have been a volleyball coach, I have toured the country and observed that many people are now playing it compared to when I was young,” he said.
