Murder accused NDF officer makes maiden court appearance

WINDHOEK, 09 SEP (NAMPA) - The member of Namibia Defence Force (NDF) who allegedly shot and killed 32-year -old, Benisius Kalola, during an Operation Kalahari Desert patrol at single Quarters on 05 September 2019 made his first appearance in Katutura Magistrate’s Court here on Monday.
Mulele Darrel Nyambe, (age unknown), who appeared before Magistrate Namwenyo Shikalepo and Prosecutor Vicky Likius, was denied bail and his case was postponed to 29 January 2020 to allow the preparation for legal representation and further investigations as the matter is serious and still at a preliminary stage.
The State requested the accused to remain in custody and the accused was advised to lodge a formal bail application if he wishes to be released.
The accused soldier appeared in person with no legal representation.
Kalola was fatally shot during the Kalahari Desert Operation at 10h45 on Thursday last week, according to police reports.
“The man was rushed to the Katutura State Hospital, however he died around 13h30,” subsequent reports from the Namibian Police Force said.
The second phase of the joint operation by the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) and the NDF was launched by the NamPol’s Inspector-General, Sebastian Ndeitunga last month.
