Six-year-old dies in shack fire at Rehoboth

REHOBOTH, 05 SEP (NAMPA) - A six-year-old boy died in the early hours of Wednesday after the shack he was sleeping in caught fire and he was burnt beyond recognition in Rehoboth’s Block E.
The Namibian Police Force’s Crime Investigations Coordinator for the Hardap Region, Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay told Nampa in an interview on Thursday that the incident happened at around 04h00 in the Duneside Informal Settlement in Block E.
Clay said according to information at hand, the deceased and three other minors along with an adult were sleeping in the shack, while the mother was at work.
“When the adult was awoken up by the fire, they escaped through a window, but the deceased could not manage and was burnt beyond recognition,” Clay said.
The three that escaped through the window were unharmed.
He said the cause of fire is unknown at this stage but investigations into the matter continue.
The deceased was identified as Hilya Shekupe and his next of kin have been informed about his death.
