Six people die in accident on Outjo-Kamandjab road

OTJIWARONGO, 31 AUG (NAMPA) - Six people, whose identities and ages are yet to be established, died on Friday afternoon when a station wagon vehicle they were travelling in overturned several times on the Outjo-Kamandjab road.
Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha in an interview with Nampa on Saturday said the deceased are three males and three females.
Mbeha said a total of 14 people, including the 49-year-old driver, were in the vehicle at the time of accident, and were travelling from the direction of Outjo to Opuwo in the Kunene Region.
At approximately 80 kilometres west of Outjo, it is alleged the vehicles left rear tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control over the vehicle and it overturned, Mbeha said,.
The accident occurred at about 16h00 on Friday afternoon.
She said that two minor children died at the accident scene, while the four others died upon arrival at the Outjo State Hospital.
Mbeha said the remaining occupants sustained serious injuries and were medically treated at the Outjo State Hospital, from where three were transferred to the Katutura Intermediate Hospital in the capital on Friday night.
A culpable homicide docket has been opened against the driver.
Police investigations continue.
