Eiseb wins Oshana Cycle Challenge

MARIENTAL, 28 AUG (NAMPA) – Marckernzy Eiseb won the inaugural Nedbank Oshana Cycle Challenge competition in windy conditions in Oshakati on Saturday.
According to a statement availed to Nampa on Wednesday, Eiseb finished the 100 kilometre (km) race in a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 46 seconds (02:14:46), just ahead of Chiponeni Kashululu, who finished in 02:19:15, while Jafet Amukushu finished third with a time of 02:30:36 seconds.
Sofia Simon, who was the only woman to compete in the 100km race, finished in a time of 02:50:48.
According to the statement, the race took cyclists from the starting point at the Game Shopping Centre and proceeded along the newly-constructed Okatana-Endola road to the town of Helao Nafidi and back.
Melki Hamukoto won the 60km category with a time of 01:13:06, followed by Joe-Joe Hamunyela with a time of 01:13:10 and Fonseca Bernardino Camenhe coming in third place in a time of 01:13:40.
Nembia Wilibard, Lisias Nashumba and Essar Mathews finished first, second and third respectively in the Men’s 25km race.
In the Women’s category in the 25km race, Julanda Mbako won the race, with Teolidis Nepembe in second, while Lovisa Shiningayamwe claimed third place.
Organiser Lucky Mbako said they believe that the event gave an opportunity for local cycling talent to be recognised.
“There has been very little support given to the sport of cycling in the north and we hope that the Oshana Cycle Challenge will continue to open other opportunities for the cycling community here,” he said.
