Speaking at the opening ceremony at Sam Nujoma Stadium, Chairperson of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Normalisation Committee (NC), Hilda Basson-Namundjebo, urged the players to realise their dreams.
“We are here to recognise the dreams that you have to become great for yourselves, your family and your country. We are here to allow you to display the talent that God gave you. We as the NC are excited about the partnership that we have with Skorpion Zinc, which is now to its sixth year,” she said.
She added that football brings people together and teaches the youth the value of team work.
The General Manger and Director of Skorpion Zinc, Irvinne Simataa, at the same occasion said his institution is supporting the under 17 tournament at a cost of N.dollars 1, 5 million annually and they hope to see the partnership continuing going forward.
He further committed that the tournament will continue next season as Skorpion Zinc believes this is more than merely football.
“There are some of you who find themselves on the pitch not only in terms of skills, some of you it is because of confidence and relationships that you build that will help you in the future. We are here to unearth talent in both the game itself and in leadership,” he explained.
Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Erastus Uutoni called on the parents and football lovers to come in numbers and support the tournament.
“This event has proven its worth as a catalyst for talented young players to gain valuable experience on a national platform in preparation for international competitions,” he said.
He noted that over the past six years, they have noticed youth players gradually develop into key players for national teams.
He noted that Lubeni Haukongo, who is currently based in France, played in this tournament with others such as Donavan Kanjaa, Marcel Papama, Approcious Petrus and Hubert Mingeri.
This year’s tournament is being held in the capital with the //Kharas Region being the defending champions after winning the tournament in Grootfontein, Otjozondjupa last year.
