Swakopmund woman charged with murder of newborn

SWAKOPMUND, 13 AUG (NAMPA) – A 27-year-old woman was arrested in Swakopmund on Monday for allegedly murdering her newborn baby.
Namibian Police Force Erongo crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu said in a police report on Tuesday that the suspect was arrested at the Swakopmund State Hospital at around 18h00 on Monday.
“It is alleged that she gave birth to a baby boy, dumped the baby in the toilet pot and flushed it, which resulted in the death of the baby,” he explained.
The woman had visited the hospital seeking medical assistance after the alleged incident.
Iikuyu said the suspect was charged with murder and concealment of birth and is currently admitted at the hospital under police guard.
The body of the deceased baby was taken to the Walvis Bay police mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Police investigations continue.
In an unrelated matter, a 26-year-old woman reportedly committed suicide on Monday by hanging herself from the roof of the shack she shared with her boyfriend in Walvis Bay.
The police said the deceased, who has been identified as Ndinelago Mbingana Shaanika, was discovered by her boyfriend upon his arrival from work at around 19h30.
Her next of kin have been informed.
No foul play is suspected and no suicide note was left behind.
