WINDHOEK, 04 AUG (NAMPA) Trustco United Rugby Club and Walvis Bay-based Kudus played to a 38-38 draw in their Namibian Rugby Premier League fixture at the Trustco United Sports field in Olympia on Saturday.
Going into their fixture, United were third on the log with 42 points and had already secured a place in the semi-finals, while Kudus needed a win to improve their position on the log standing.
The Walvis Bay-based outfit opened the scoring early in the first half with a penalty by Aurelio Plato, which was later backed up with a try from Chesbrough Lawrence, with Plato scoring the conversion to give his side a 10-point lead in the early minutes of the match.
Despite Kudus dominance in the opening stage of the first half, the home team managed to put points on the scoreboard through a try by Shaun van Rooi, which was converted by Winmar Rust.
United ran in their second try just minutes before the half-time break but Rust failed to convert from the spot. Despite Rusts missed conversion, United went into the half-time break with a 12-10 lead.
The home team came out the more dominant outfit in the second half, continuing where they left off in the first half with an early try from Hanreco van Zyl but the conversion was once again missed by Rust.
Kudu then replied with their own try after brilliant play from the centre of the field saw Rayton Paulse, beating the United defence for a brilliant try, which was converted by Plato to leave the score at 17-17.
With Kudus showing their strength throughout the match, United upped their game and ran in two tries through Carlton Stevens and Dean Blom, with Rust converting both tries.
Kudus bounced back with a try from Lawrence, with Plato once again making no mistake with the conversion. With only five minutes left in the game, United scored their last try of the match through substitute Jan Theron and Stevens scored the conversion.
Kudus hard work and determination on the day paid off with a try in the last minutes of the game after brilliant passing from the left of the field to the right found Cameron Stevens who ran in their final try of the day, which was again converted by Plato to bring the final score to 38-38.
With the result, United remain third on the log on 45 points, while UNAM are top on 48 points and Wanderers second with 47 points.
The draw leaves Kudus at sixth position, with 18 points.
