Mother and toddler run over by truck at Otjiwarongo

OTJIWARONGO, 04 AUG (NAMPA) - A 29-year-old woman, carrying her two-year-old baby boy on her back, was on Saturday night run over by a truck on the Otjiwarongo-Otavi road.

Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha in an interview with Nampa on Sunday said the woman died on the spot, while her son survived the accident and is in a critical condition at the Katutura Intermediate Hospital in Windhoek, where he was transferred shortly after the incident.

The accident occurred some three kilometres north of Otjiwarongo at approximately 23h00.

Mbeha added that it is still unclear to the police where the deceased and her son were coming from or headed.

A culpable homicide docket has been opened against the 45-year-old truck driver, who was treated for shock at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital shortly after the incident.

Police investigations in the matter continue.
