ONGWEDIVA, 15 JAN (NAMPA) – The Annual Gabriel Simon Shokonawa Marathon will take centre stage at Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West Region for the first time on 25 January 2014.
“It is going to be in honour for the people of Kavango, and they are expected to come in numbers and make the event live as this is the first time such an event is hosted in their region,” organiser and initiator Gabriel Simon Shokonawa, a local marathon runner, said in an interview with Nampa on Wednesday.
The event comprises 42.2 kilometre (km), 21km and 10km races, as well as a 4km walk for veteran athletes.
Shokonawa will join those taking part in the 42.2km race.
“Minister Rosalia Nghidinwa of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Works and Transport Minister Errki Nghimtina, Safety and Security Deputy Minister Erastus Uutoni and other high-profile officials will participate in the 4km walk,” he said.
Nghidinwa will officially open the event.
The Annual Gabriel Simon Shokonawa Marathon was initially only hosted in the northern region of Ohangwena since its inception in 2006, and took place for the first time last year at Farm Ondera in the Oshikoto Region.
The Namibia Women in Sport Association, Small Boss business outlets, Oshikango Garage and OK Stores are sponsoring the event.
