WINDHOEK, 18 JUL (NAMPA) – MTC Sunshine Boxing and Fitness Academy Chairperson Nestor Tobias on Wednesday announced the undercard boxers for the fight between Mikka Shonena and Youli Dong of China.
The fight is slated for 24 August at the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair.
The supporting bouts are Paulus Amavila versus Immanuel Jason; Mateus Heita vs Paulus Aikela; Filipus Nghitumbwa vs a yet to be confirmed opponent; Edison Nghipondoka vs Chikondi Makawa from Malawi and Emmanuel Mungadjela vs Simon Shafodino.
Other bouts include Sebastian Nathaniel vs Niikoti Johannes; Joseph Bernard vs Dominicus Weyulu; Paulinus Paulus vs Future Maziya from Zimbabwe and Harry Simon Junior vs Philip Musariri from Zimbabwe.
Tobias made the announcement in the capital, saying the fight is important to both boxers as the winner will be rated in the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) top three world ranking.
Shonena who boasts a record of 14 fights, all of which he won, is currently the WBO champion. His opponent Dong has a record of 15 fights with one loss and is ranked number 15 by the WBO and is also WBO Asia Pacific welterweight champion.
“For you to be rated, you need to fight a boxer in the top 15 rank and Dong is a world class fighter who is rated at number 15. The winner of this fight will be in the top three and get a chance to fight for the world title,” said Tobias.
The event was also attended by the Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service Erastus Uutoni, who said Namibia can emerge as a strong nation in sport, especially in boxing.
He thus commended MTC for sponsoring the boxing academy and urged them to expand to other regions.
“I hope MTC expands to other regions to make boxing strong locally, because I believe we are one of the strongest countries in boxing in this southern region of the continent,” he said.
