No promotion, relegation for 2018/19 season

WINDHOEK, 10 JUL (NAMPA) – The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA)’s Normalisation Committee (NC) at the Namibia Football Association on Wednesday said the 2018/19 Namibia Premier League (NPL) season will have no promoting or relegation, a status that includes the two lower leagues.
This was revealed in a press statement issued by the NFA on Wednesday, which said the decision came from FIFA after the NC had engaged the world football body on the issue.
“We engaged FIFA with regards to a preferred outcome for the promotion and relegation of teams in the Premier League as well as for clubs in the First and Second Division. During the FIFA World Congress in June 2019, the mother body formally endorsed the position of the NC that there should be no promotion or relegation among the three leagues,” the statement said.
It said this was quoted in Article 9 of the FIFA Statutes, which deals with the principle of promotion and relegation, which believes that no “sporting merit” exists to determine a club’s participation in a league.
The statement concluded by saying the decision is in the best interest of football, given the specific abnormal realities in the fraternity.
When contacted by Nampa on other issues related to promotion/relegation of the teams in this past season, the chairperson of the NC, Hilda Basson-Namundjebo said they will soon be appointing an Appeals Committee within this month to deal with the matters.
Those include the issue of Young African, who were relegated from the NPL after being found guilty of illegally registering a player with fake documents.
This led to Young Chiefs, who were relegated in the 2017/18 season, appealing their relegation, saying Young African had used an illegitimate player.
The two matters could not be handled by the previous NFA executive committee as the fight between the then Secretary General Barry Rukoro, and President, Frans Mbidi, rendered the association ungovernable.
Meanwhile the NPL Chief Executive Officer, Harald Füller, said he only saw the news on the NFA website as he has not received any communication from the NC.
“We will sit down with the NPL Executive Committee and then pronounce ourselves on the issue,” Füller said.
The decision now means the two relegated teams in the 2018/19 season, Civics and Orlando Pirates will participate in the upcoming 2019/20 season.
