WINDHOEK, 04 JUL (NAMPA) – A provisional list comprising 126 athletes, coaches and officials has been set up to represent Namibia at the 2019 All Africa Games (AAG) to be held in Morocco from 19 to 31 August.
Team Namibia will compete in 14 sport codes at the AAG that will see Africa’s best competing amongst each other.
Speaking to Nampa on Thursday, Victoria Katukula, the chef de mission for team Namibia explained that due to financial constraints only a small group of athletes who are believed to represent the country well, were selected.
She however said the list might change if some of the athletes do not meet the qualifying standards of the championships they are currently competing at.
“We want to compete at these games - that is one reason why we selected the best of the best in the country. Our goal at these games is to see these athletes reaching the Olympic qualifying standards so they can represent the country in Tokyo, Japan next year,” Katukula said.
She added that teams are currently training on their own despite not receiving their preparation funds from the government.
Team Namibia ended seventh overall out of 50 countries that participated at the 2015 AAG in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.
Namibia won five gold medals, four silvers and six bronze. All the gold medals were won by Namibia’s athletes with disabilities.
