OTJIWARONGO, 28 JUN (NAMPA) - The Swapo Party Political Bureau (Politburo) has nullified the recent suspension of Otjozondjupa Regional Governor, Otto Ipinge and several regional and local authority councillors by the party’s regional leadership.
Ipinge and the other regional Swapo leaders were suspended from the party's activities with immediate effect on 12 June by the party’s Otjozondjupa Regional Coordinator Susan Hikopua.
The suspended members were Otjiwarongo constituency councillor, Julius Neumbo, Steve Biko Booys of Okahandja, Grootfontein’s Nelao Amagulu, Grootfontein Mayor Abisai Haimene and the chairperson of the management committee at Grootfontein Municipality Jack Tsanigab.
In a letter addressed to Hikopua on 24 June 2019, Swapo Party Secretary-General Sophia Shaningwa declared the action taken by the regional coordinator as un-procedural and illegal.
She therefore said the suspension of the regional councilors and local authority councilors was null and void.
In the letter, Shaningwa explained that the ruling party's politburo resolved on 21 June 2019 to establish a high level committee that will engage all those involved in the party structures in Otjozondjupa Region in a bid to get to the bottom of the problem.
“I would therefore like to urge the leadership in your region to refrain from all sorts of conduct which may result not only in creating confusion and mistrust among the rank and file, but also has a potential to cause deeper divisions within the party in the region,” reads the letter.
Shaningwa in the letter also warned Hikopua not to suspend any party member in the future without following the laid down procedures.
Upon enquiry on Wednesday, Hikopua said that she was yet to receive such a letter from the Swapo Party Politburo.
Shaningwa confirmed the authenticity of her letter on Friday.
