WINDHOEK, 27 JUN (NAMPA) – The sixth edition of the Omaheke Top 8 football and netball tournament under the auspices of the Epukiro Sports Council will take place at the Legare Stadium in Gobabis this weekend.
A member of the organising committee Ngatuuane Hange told Nampa on Wednesday that the tournament will feature teams from Omaheke’s constituencies who have reached the quarter-finals during their respective annual tournaments held in December last year.
He said the tournament has this year attracted 18 netball and 26 football teams.
“We have put aside N. dollars 30 000 to be shared between the winning teams, besides trophies and medals,” he added.
Hange noted that the final winner in football battle will walk away with N.dollars 10 000, a trophy including 20 gold medals.
The runners-up will pocket N.dollars 5 000 plus 20 silver medals while each semi-finalists will take home N. dollars 2 500.
In the netball category, N.dollars 5 000 will go to the final winner, a trophy and 12 gold medals.
“The runner-up will take home N. dollars 2 500, a trophy and 12 silver medals while each semi-finalists will walk away with N.dollars 1 250,” explained Hange.
He further added that netball games will start at 10h00 while that of football will kick-off at 07h00 on Saturday.
He urged that since this is a one-weekend competition, teams must respect time and maintain cooperation in order to avoid postponements of matches as it is very difficult to acquire sports venues.
Aminuis-based Fire Eyes won the finals in the football category last year after defeating Hoslek from Otjinene while Manokile ladies from Otjinoko won the netball series after defeating Renamo Bucks from Okombomi.
