Keimune’s own goal sinks Namibia in AFCON opener

WINDHOEK, 23 JUN (NAMPA) – An 89th minute own goal from Namibia’s right winger, Itamunua Keimuine, was all Morocco needed to collect maximum points in their opening match of the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) currently underway in Egypt.

Namibia, who are in Group D alongside Morocco, South Africa and Ivory Coast, lost their opening match of the championships 0-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo.

The Brave Warriors put up an impressive defence throughout the 90 minutes of the game as the ‘Atlas Lions’ of Morocco controlled possession and had a number of shots on target but an on form Loydt Kazapua was on hand to keep them at bay.

Kazapua, who had a man of the match performance on the day, made numerous saves in both halves but his efforts went to waste as substitute Keimuine’s failure to clear the ball to safety saw it finding the back of the net with just one-minute left in regulation time.

The defeat puts Namibia at the bottom of the group standing.

The Brave Warriors will play their second group game against South Africa on 28 June at Al Salam Stadium, while their last group game against Ivory Coast will be on 01 July at the Cairo International Stadium.
