KEETMANSHOOP, 22 JUN (NAMPA) - //Kharas Governor, Lucia Basson has urged those who have turned eighteen in her region to register during the upcoming supplementary voters’ registration so as to enable them to vote in the national elections later this year.
The supplementary voter registration is set for 08 to 27 July this year while Namibians will go to the polls to vote in the Presidential and National Assembly elections on 27 November 2019.
Basson who was speaking during her fourth State of the Region Address here on Friday said: “Register so that you are able to exercise your democratic right, if you vote then you can complain if things are not done right.”
On the economic development of her region, the Governor encouraged the unemployed youth to apply for mining claims in the semi-precious stones, precious stones, dimension stones, industrial minerals and base and rare metals which is available and can transform the region's economy.
She announced that the Noordoewer slate mining and processing facility has produced approximately 9 000 square metres slate tiles to date, since resuming operations in mid-2015.
“Therefore I am requesting the regional council and all local authorities in the region, to make use of these high quality tiles in some of their projects. This would boost our growth at home strategy and the procurement of local products and to sustain the operations of these slate tiles,” she remarked.
Basson who also spoke about the drought situation in her region, called for the setting up of small scale irrigation fields in order to produce fodder, as there is a shortage of fodder countrywide.
“This sewer water is an economic opportunity for our localities, currently we have to wait for fodder from Gobabis in Omaheke Region while we can produce here with this sewer water,” she stressed.
