OMUNGWELUME, 12 JUN (NAMPA) – Ohangwena Governor Usko Nghaamwa has donated an ox worth N.dollars 14 000 to Omungwelume Senior Secondary School (SSS) for a fundraising event later this month.
A gala dinner will be held at the school on 22 June to raise funds for the construction of a hostel.
Nampa reported earlier this year that nearly 100 learners of the school live in a house without running water as the school does not have a hostel.
Nghaamwa previously solicited 58 500 bricks, which was handed over recently.
In a speech delivered on his behalf when the ox was handed over on Tuesday, Nghaamwa said the regional leadership, the management of the school, parents and other key stakeholders decided to construct a hostel and to make the environment more conducive to learning.
The learners currently rent shacks and some reportedly sleep in car wrecks in the vicinity. There have also been reports that boys and girls share accommodation.
“We are in the process of acquiring construction materials in the meantime, while raising funds through other means to make our dream a reality,” Nghaamwa said.
The school’s principal, George Nanghanda said they have been hoping to construct a hostel for some time now.
“We are currently at the point where Namibians are seeing our struggle of raising the needed funds for the construction,” he said.
Nanghanda encouraged Namibians to support the gala dinner to assist the school.
Omungwelume Senior Secondary School was established in 1976 and currently has 587 learners in Grades 10 to 12, of which only 102 attend school from home, while more than 300 are from outside the settlement and have to find alternative accommodation.
