WINDHOEK, 10 JUN (NAMPA) – Cliven Loubser scored a last minute penalty to propel Namibia to a 30-28 victory over World Rugby Nations Cup hosts Uruguay on Saturday.
Namibia were the first to strike when Loubser scored a penalty in the 10th minute, before Jaco Venter touched down for the first try of the match.
Loubser converted the resultant kick to make it 10-0 for Namibia with 21 minutes played.
Namibia continued to trouble the hosts as Venter scored his second try of the match following a beautiful interchange of passes by the Namibian team, with Loubser making no mistake with the boot for a 17-0 advantage for his team.
In the 31st minute Loubser missed an opportunity to put Namibia ahead when his penalty crashed against the goal post, after which Uruguay scored their first points through a try by Andrés Vilaseca, which was converted by Cesar Cat to make the scoreline 17-07 at half-time.
Namibia added more points in the 41st minute when Loubser once again scored from a penalty to make it 20-07.
Uruguay responded immediately in the 44th minute with a try by Vilaseca, which was converted by Cat to make it 20-14.
Uruguay were then awarded a penalty in the 54th minute which they missed and a minute later Namibia was dealt a major blow when Oderich Mouton was sin binned for a dangerous tackle.
Namibia then scored a great try when they turned defence into attack in the 62nd minute, with JC Greyling capitalising on the host nation's defensive mistake to touch down for the points.
Loubser converted to make the scoreline 27-14.
The hosts then mounted a sustained attack, putting Namibia under immense pressure and were rewarded in the 72nd minute when Manuel Ardao scored a try which was converted by Cat to make it 27-21.
With the Namibians seemingly getting tired, Uruguay pilled on the pressure, resulting in a try by Germán Kessler and converted by Cat, which took the scoreline to 28-27 in favour of the home team.
Staring defeat in the face, Namibia then forced their opponents into committing a foul in the dying seconds of the match and Loubser scored to give Namibia a 30-28 victory.
The victory follows a 25-39 defeat to Argentina XV last Wednesday at the Estadio Charrua in Montevideo.
Namibia currently sits at the bottom of the log with four points.
Uruguay top the log with seven points following their bonus points win over Russia and defeat to Namibia.
Argentina are second with six points and Russia third on the same number of points.
Namibia next plays Russia on Saturday, while Uruguay faces Argentina.
