RUNDU, 04 JUN (NAMPA) – The Rundu Town Council (RTC) has completed the composition of its management committee the RTC’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Sikongo Haihambo said here on Tuesday.
The RTC has been without a functioning management committee since the beginning of December 2018.
“This had a negative impact on the management of the town affairs thereby reducing the ability of the town to render service effectively,” Haihambo told Nampa in an interview.
The completion of the management committee comes after the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Peya Mushelenga threatened to suspend the entire Rundu Town Council last week if its management committee is not complete by 07 June.
Haihambo explained that councilor Toini Hausiku was sworn in as the third member of the management committee last Friday, thereby completing the management committee in terms of the Local Authority Act of 1992.
The Acting CEO further explained that Hausiku voluntarily relinquished her position as deputy mayor on 28 May 2019, which she held since 07 February 2019.
“After relinquishing her position as deputy mayor, Hausiku became an ordinary member of the council and thereby became eligible for appointing in any vacant position on the council,” he stated.
Hausiku joins chairperson, Anastacia Antonio and member Mathew Wakudumo of the All People’s Party, who are the other two members of the management committee.
Hausiku said she relinquished the position of deputy mayor to fast-track the slow pace of service delivery attributed to the absence of a functioning management committee over the past few months.
Meanwhile, Haihambo said the RTC will, for now, operate without a deputy mayor until further notice.
