WINDHOEK, 10 JAN (NAMPA) - Commissioner Desiderius Ireneus Shilunga has been appointed as the Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s new Regional Commander for the Khomas Region.
NamPol Inspector-General, Lieutenant-General Sebastian Ndeitunga made the announcement during a media briefing here on Friday.
Shilunga succeeds Festus Shilongo, who was Khomas Regional Commander until the end of November 2013, when he took up a position as head of security at the Namibian Port Authority (Namport) in Walvis Bay.
Ndeitunga said during his announcement that Shilunga has also been promoted to the rank of Major-General, adding that his duties in office commence on Monday, 13 January.
“The Khomas Region is very difficult in terms of policing. Khomas is the seat of the legislative, the economic hub and also attracts higher profile crime,” Ndeitunga said while announcing Shilunga’s appointment.
Shilunga has served the force in various capacities since 1991.
He became Regional Commander of the //Karas Region in 1994 and was entrusted with the responsibility of being the Regional Commander of both the //Karas and Hardap Regions.
He then served as Regional Commander of both the //Karas and Omaheke Regions in 1999.
Commissioner Shilunga served as Police Regional Commander of the Khomas Region between 2000 and 2005 after which he was Commanding Officer of the Israel Patrick Iyambo Police College until 2007.
He was appointed as the Head of the Special Field Force Directorate in 2008, and became the Head of the Internal Investigations Directorate in 2010. In 2011, Shilunga became the Head of Training and Development Directorate, a position he held until the new appointment.
“Commissioner Shilunga is indeed one of the very few tested cadres, and I place my full confidence in him to optimally manage the resources of the Khomas Region, both human and material, to effectively carry out the mandates of the Namibian Police Force, and ensure that the crime situation in the region is addressed,” Ndeitunga said.
He also announced the appointment of Inspector Johanna Ndahafa Ngando as the Regional Commander for the Kavango East Region, with her official duties in office commencing on Monday.
Chief Inspector Monaliza Molebugi has been appointed as the head of NamPol’s Training and Development Directorate.
Both Ngando and Molebugi were also promoted to the rank of Commissioner.
They are currently in Zimbabwe for police induction before their official duties commence.
