WINDHOEK, 28 MAY (NAMPA) The Khomas Netball Federation on Tuesday rewarded the regions Under-19 team which came second in the 2019 Namibian Newspaper Cup held in Mariental in April.
Speaking at the ceremony in Windhoek, Khomas Netball Region public relations officer Isack Hamata said the region was the biggest netball region despite coming second to Erongo.
Hamata said by giving each player N.dollars 300, it is a token of appreciation from the federation for the job well done in Mariental.
We said it is all about development. Even if you did not win, we are here to celebrate with you. It is a pity we did not win gold, but there is always a next time. It is not a big amount of money, but it is the gesture from our side which says we are thankful for your performance, he said.
From the prize money of N.dollars 15 000, the region deducted the operation amount of N.dollars 10 000. The remaining N.dollars 5 000 was split equally amongst the players and technical team.
Hamata noted that several of the regions Under-19 players are currently playing for various teams in the regions premier league, as well as the first and second divisions.
He added that they will have an outreach programme with the team to places like Groot Aub, Dordabis and the outskirts of Katutura as part of their developmental plans.
We will call upon you as regional players to attract more people to play netball. We want you to share your knowledge with people who have never seen or played netball, he said.
Hamata added that in countries like South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, people play netball professionally, which is still a dream for the Khomas Netball Federation.
Out of sports comes many opportunities, as South Africa has proven. People play netball for money as the sport is now professional. We can do the same. For us, sports must pay you back for the time you spend on the court, he explained.
Pre-tournament favourites Khomas Region lost 28-45 to Erongo in the second edition of the netball tournament.
