WINDHOEK, 26 MAY (NAMPA) A new-look Welwitschias rugby squad was given a baptism of fire by a rampant Leopards team, who beat them 81-08, on Saturday.
The SuperSport Rugby Challenge match took place at the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium in Windhoek.
The visitors did not allow the home team to settle down as they scored a total of 13 tries, converting eight of them, while the Welwitschias only managed a single try and a penalty conversion.
The difference in quality was evident as early as the fourth minute, when Wandi Mazibuko crossed over for the opening try.
Schalk Hugo missed the conversion, leaving the scoreboard reading 5-0 in favour of the visitors.
It was soon 10-0 when Evardi Boshoff added five more points from a solo try before Eugene Hare added a converted try to make it 17-0.
Man of the match Morné Moos then made it 24-0 within 20 minutes with a converted try.
Five minutes later it was 31-0 after Lungelo Gosa touched down for another converted try.
Gustav du Rand then added his name to the score card with yet another converted try to make it 38-0 before the home team registered their first points of the match through a penalty by Henrique Olivier to make it 38-03.
Hare added his second try of the day before Boshoff followed suit to leave the scoreline a massive 50-03 at half-time.
After the resumption, Boshoff scored his third try of the day bringing it to 55-03 before the home team scored their only try of the day through Uazikamisa Mieze.
The visitors added more tries through André Fouche, Bradley Moolman, Keagan Tait and Wilmar Groenewald for the final score of 81-08 in favour of the Leopards.
Namibias first choice players were unavailable because of their scheduled departure to the Nations Cup tournament in Uruguay next week.
The selectors therefore chose 31 local players for the Welwitschias final three matches in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge against the Leopards at home, against the Pumas away on 01 June, and at home against the Falcons on 08 June.
