OTJIWARONGO, 09 JAN (NAMPA) – A 31-year-old man escaped unhurt after the truck he was driving caught fire while moving on the B1 road between Otjiwarongo and Okahandja on Wednesday evening.
The incident happened at 24h00 Wednesday evening, about 60 kilometres outside Otjiwarongo.
The driver, Nelson Ndukireepo, told Nampa on Thursday morning at the scene that he saw smoke covering the windscreen of the truck belonging to Blaauws’ Transport company.
“Within minutes, I heard a sound similar to that of an explosion, and the whole truck was then in flames,” he said.
Ndukireepo said luckily, the truck had stopped by itself in the middle of the road when he managed to jump out in shock.
The truck was transporting brown sugar from Windhoek to Tsumeb.
The Otjozondjupa Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Maureen Mbeha confirmed the incident.
“However, there was no case registered with the police, and we thus don’t know the value of the consignment,” she said.
