WINDHOEK, 21 MAY (NAMPA) – Tigers Football Club’s push for a top eight finish in the 2019/19 MTC Namibia Premier League received a boost when they defeated African Stars by 1-0 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Monday evening.
This was the second meeting of the two teams in the space of three days following their clash in the 2018/19 Standard Bank Top 8 Final played at the same venue on Saturday.
Stars emerged 2-0 victors in that match to lift the maiden trophy, receiving prize money of N.dollars 500 000 for their efforts.
On Monday evening however, Tigers’ second half substitute, Absalom Iimbondi scored the all-important goal 10 minutes into the second half after robbing Treasure Kauapirura of the ball at the edge of the box before stroking the ball past the advancing Uzuva-Vipua Tjimune, in goals for Stars.
Despite the match not being as enthralling as their Saturday encounter, the two teams did manage to create several chances, which were wasted by their strikers.
Stars’ Panduleni Nekundi, Ibroihim Youssouf and Ambrosious Amseb missed more than six chances between them, while Tigers’ chances were squandered by Steven Gariseb, Muna Katupose, Tatenda Dzumbunu and Terdius Uiseb.
Tigers now need to win their last match against Mighty Gunners at the same venue to guarantee themselves a place in the 2019/20 Standard Bank Top 8 competition.
Stars have already secured second position on the log for the current season.
