Stars dent Unam FC's top four hopes

WINDHOEK, 16 MAY (NAMPA) – The University of Namibia (Unam) Football Club’s dream of a top four finish were dented when a 10-men African Stars team defeated them 1-0 in an MTC Namibia Premier League match played at Sam Nujoma Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Substitute Chrispen Mbewe scored the all-important goal in the 88th minute following a school-boy error by Unam’s goalkeeper, Fransisco Gariseb.

The 21-year-old rookie goal-minder failed to gather a harmless looking cross and the alert Mbewe pounced, leaving Unam FC's defense at sixes and sevens.

Aside from the goal, the match did not produce any sparks as both sets of players produced a below par performance, with passes going astray, while crosses either flew out of play or failed to find their intended targets.

Stars could have scored in the 12th minute, but Treasure Kauapirura shot wide, while he had an option of passing to Panduleni Nekundi, who was unmarked in the box.

Image Isaak also tried his luck from distance in the 15th minute, but his shot was tipped over the bar for a corner by Gariseb.

From the resulting set piece, an unmarked Nekundi headed the ball straight at the keeper.

On the other end, Edmund Kambanda flashed his shot marginally wide after finding himself face to face with the goalkeeper in the 44th minute to leave both sides tied 0-0 at halftime.

Stars showed their intent to win the match as Isaak skewed another shot merely 44 seconds after resumption of play, while Youssouf Ibroihim won possession in his own half and drove into the opposition's half before shooting wide.

Things then took a twisted turn as Dennis Tjetjinda Ngueza was given a straight red card for dissent.

Stars' veteran defender had been booked for a clumsy foul on Jandja Maharero and reacted by directing a barrage of insults to the match official, Wilhem Haitembu, who was left with no choice but to expel him.

Despite second-placed African Stars' win, log leaders Black Africa can win the title league by either drawing with or defeating Orlando Pirates when the two teams lock horns at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Thursday evening.
