OTJIWARONGO, 09 MAY (NAMPA) A 25-year-old man was on Wednesday sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of his then 19-year-old girlfriend, Desery Vejama Jatamunua in September 2017 in Okakarara.
Veumuna Pakina Hameva was found guilty and sentenced here on Wednesday by Magistrate Marilize du Plessis on the charge of murder.
Five state witnesses were called to the Otjiwarongo Regional Court during trial and they told the court that in the early hours of 09 September 2017, Hameva called them from his mobile phone saying he just killed his girlfriend in a quarrel.
They then informed other people and a search was conducted until the lifeless body of Jatamuna was found in the fields where Hameva directed them to as he had fled the scene.
The court was told that at the time of the incident, Hameva and the deceased were walking together back to their house from a trade fair show that was running at the Okakarara Trade Fair Centre.
Hameva was arrested later the same day.
Du Plessis was satisfied with the witness statements and sentenced Hameva to an effective 18 years imprisonment.
Legal Aid lawyer Kenneth Siambango represented Hameva in the case, while Leonard Tjiveze represented the prosecution.
