Over 220 arrested for traffic offences in WHK

WINDHOEK, 07 JAN (NAMPA) – A total of 222 arrests were made between 01 December 2013 and 06 January 2014 for various traffic offenses committed in the capital.
Statistics provided by City Police Superintendent Gerhard Kakonda on Monday indicated that these arrests followed outstanding warrants of arrest for traffic offences committed earlier.
A total of 334 warrants of arrest were also executed during the same period.
City Police records further showed that 603 fines were issued to motorists in Windhoek over the same period.
Such fines included exceeding speed limits on urban roads in the capital.
Eight people were penalised for operating their mobile phones while driving, and 81 people were caught driving without wearing seat belts, while 19 were stopped for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Seven people were also charged for driving with learner’s licences only - without the supervision of a licensed driver.
Only two vehicles were impounded by the City Police for unroadworthiness during the same period.
