REHOBOTH, 02 MAY (NAMPA) - England-based footballer Ryan Nyambe, who plays for Blackburn Rovers, has said he is available to play for Namibia in the 2019 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Egypt.
A statement availed by the Namibian Football Association on Thursday said an enthusiastic Brave Warriors coach Ricardo Mannetti welcomed him to the team.
The statement said Nyambe has had to deal with scrutiny from both local media and the public on his availability to play for the country of his birth, Namibia.
He previously entertained the idea of representing England at international level, rather than play for Namibia.
Mannetti also previously informed Nampa that Nyambe was only willing to play for Namibia after Afcon in the new season, meaning any time from August
He has now however confirmed Nyambe’s participation.
“It is the biggest dream for any player to don their national colours and I am happy that he has decided to do so now. Going to Afcon, we need all the players we can get and he is surely a player of a different dimension. I had a lot of conversations with him and it is clear that he weighed his options carefully,” Mannetti was quoted as saying in the statement.
The coach believes right-back Nyambe, 21, will add “tremendous value” to the team in the Afcon finals given his pedigree and fine form during his sudden rise in the game.
According to the statement an optimistic Nyambe said he is pleased to have joined the team.
“It has always been coming, I have been thinking about it for a while and now I am ready and raring to go and feel honoured to play for my country and excited to meet the squad,” he said.
He said he hopes to make an impact to help the team to succeed.
Nyambe made his Rovers academy debut in the 2014/15 season and progressed through the academy system and into the development squad. He was awarded a three-year professional contract in July 2015 and this month agreed to a new contract to keep him at Ewood Park until 2021. He has so far made 97 first-team appearances for the Championship side.
