Nearly 150 accidents in Windhoek in December

WINDHOEK, 06 JAN (NAMPA) - The City Police have recorded 143 accidents in the capital from 01 December 2013 to 06 January this year.
Superintendent Gerhard Kakonda told Nampa on Monday 34 people were injured and two people died in the accidents recorded over this period.
“Eleven of these crashes were alcohol related and 13 of the crashes involved pedestrians,” he said.
According to Kakonda, one pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue last week, while a three-year-old boy died when a taxi collided with an Isuzu pick-up in Otjomuise on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund said in a media statement on Monday that 85 people died in accidents countrywide between 22 November 2013 and 05 January 2014.
This is compared to the 83 fatalities recorded over the same period in the previous year.
