WINDHOEK, 26 APR (NAMPA) - Ganja Users of Namibia president Brian Jaftha, who was arrested on Wednesday for possessing marijuana, was released on bail of N.dollars 1 000 when he appeared in the Katutura Magistrates Court on Friday.
According to media reports, Jaftha was arrested after the police raided his house in Katutura and found marijuana just days after the group protested and handed over a petition to Cabinet requesting that marijuana usage be legalised in Namibia.
His bail was initially set at N.dollars 2 000 but he then told Magistrate Atutala Namwenyo Shikalepo he cannot afford the amount because he is unemployed. The amount was then reduced to N.dollars 1000.
His case was postponed to 13 August to allow for further police investigations and for him to obtain legal aid. If he fails to show up at 09h00 on his next court date, a warrant of arrest may be issued against him and the bail money will be provisionally cancelled and provisionally forfeited to the State.
