OTJIWARONGO, 26 APR (NAMPA) – Chairperson of the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) at Otjiwarongo, Paulus Haipare joined the Swapo Party at the town on Thursday.
Haipare was welcomed by a cheering crowd of Swapo members who attended a media briefing where he re-joined his old political friends alongside another new Swapo member, Abraham Xam //Goaseb.
Swapo treasurer for the Otjozondjupa Region, Patrick Xoagub introduced the two men as old Swapo members who were “sidelined by the then Swapo administration in the region”.
“Today we welcome you back to your party, and feel at home,” said Xoagub.
Haipare in his short acceptance remarks thanked the current Swapo Party leadership for welcoming him back, saying he is not coming back to the party to grab any political position.
“But I think the way forward we need to consult each other when filling party positions for us to see whether we can agree on the nominated candidates if they can serve the interest of all party members,” he said.
Haipare was reluctant to discuss his political history and his affiliation to the RDP, only telling Nampa after the media briefing that he was chief executive officer of the Otjiwarongo Municipality from 2002 until he left in 2004.
According to Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) records, Haipare in 2010 contested the Otjiwarongo Regional Constituency elections on an RDP ticket against two other candidates.
At the time, he obtained 1 823 votes, while Florence Tjiriange of Swanu got 260, and Otto Ipinge of Swapo won with 3 416 votes.
