RUNDU, 25 APR (NAMPA) – Three learners from the Kavango East Region have been selected to take part in this year’s Confederation of Southern African Schools Sports Association (Cosassa) athletics championships.
The championships will take place in eSwatini from 01 to 05 May.
The three learners competed in the Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) national athletics championships which took place from 12 to 13 April this year, where close to 200 athletes from all 14 regions took part.
The athletes are Beatrice Masilingi from Noordgrens Senior Secondary School (SSS), Christine Mboma from Shiyungwe SSS and Katenda Stefanus from Likwatera Junior Primary School.
Masilingi won three gold medals in the 100, 200 and 400 metre races and set a new record for the 400 metre race as the overall winner in all 14 regions of the country.
Mboma won a gold medal in the 1 500 metre event, while Stefanus won two gold medals in 3 000m and 1 500m.
The Director of Education in the region, Fanuel Kapapero during a luncheon recently held to thank the learners said he is very happy that the region has stars in the making.
“These are very special learners to us because they have been selected to represent Namibia on a national level,” he said.
Kapapero said his directorate felt they had to do something small for the athletes to show their appreciation and to show them that they care and value what the learners have done for athletics in the region.
He said the education directorate has further committed itself to buy blankets and running shoes for two of the athletes who won gold medals as they come from vulnerable families and do not have these items.
The chairperson of the NSSU in the region, Paulus Mutangara said he is proud of the learners and promised to continue to nurture their athletic abilities.
