WINDHOEK, 25 APR (NAMPA) - The 2019 edition of the MTC Sam Nujoma Half Marathon was launched here on Thursday.
The eighth edition of the event will take place in Windhoek on 12 May from Ausspannplatz and is open to local and international runners.
Speaking at the launch, MTC’s Corporate Affairs Manager John Ekongo said the half-marathon is held in honour of Namibia’s founding president.
The athletes will compete and prepare for other international marathons, he said.
“As a sole sponsor of the event, MTC has this year committed N.dollars 139 000 in cash and N.dollars 55 717 in kind towards the event,” Ekongo said.
He added that as it has been in the past, sponsoring this marathon is part of their corporate social responsibilities.
Athletics Namibia is organising the race that comprises 21 kilometre (km), 10km and 5km races.
Prizes range from N.dollars 10 000 for the male and female winners to N.dollars 1 000 for persons in position six.
Registration for the event is open from 08 May and athletes are required to collect their registration numbers the day before the event.
Over 470 athletes participated in the seventh edition of the half marathon, which was won by Kefas Kondjashili and Helalia Johannes in the men’s and women’s races respectively.
