KEETMANSHOOP, 23 APR (NAMPA) – Close to 1 000 people gathered at the J Stephanus Stadium Monday night to receive the //Kharas Region’s Under-20 football team after they won the 2019 Namibian Newspaper Cup.
The tournament took place in Mariental from Friday until Monday.
The Kharas team played against Otjozondjupa in the final which they won 2-1, making them the winners of the Newspaper Cup for the first time since its inception.
Player of the tournament, Simeon Namondi and goalkeeper of the tournament, Fritz Narib, were also from //Kharas.
The team walked away with a trophy and N.dollars 30 000.
They were met by a convoy of close to 100 cars at the road block outside town before driving to the stadium, where they met with tears of joy and endless hugs and handshakes.
Before the team departed for Mariental last week, //Kharas Governor Lucia Basson urged them to make history by bringing the cup home.
An emotional Basson on Monday promised the team N.dollars 30 000.
“I promised the boys something before they played the finals and my office is ready to give them N.dollars 30 000. This means they will have a total of N.dollars 60 000,” she said.
Keetmanshoop Mayor Gaudentia Kröhne, who spearheaded the welcoming ceremony, thanked all those who played important roles in the players’ victory.
“We want to thank the business community, the inhabitants of the region, the technical team and the team for a job well done. We did it together,” she said.
