OUTJO, 23 APR (NAMPA) – The second annual cricket festival for girls Under-15 on Sunday attracted over 60 participants at the Etoshapoort Stadium in Outjo.
The 2019 annual cricket event was organised by Cricket Namibia in conjunction with Sanlam Namibia.
Cricket Namibia development officer, Wilhelm Tuhafeni in an interview with Nampa on Monday said the aim of the festival is to create public awareness about the sport among girls aged between 11 and 15 years in the country.
The winning girls at the festival received medals, certificates and trophies.
“We are also aiming at developing their skills and to promote this sport among themselves at a tender age in the remote towns, like Outjo,” he said.
Tuhafeni called on parents and corporate companies to support the sport of cricket among boys and girls.
A representative of Sanlam Namibia at the event, Deon van Zyl said his company will continue to support cricket at community levels in order to allow underprivileged young people to participate and have access to various sport codes.
“We are also privileged as a company to provide this opportunity to the boys and girls of this town since it is our desire to change their lifestyles through different sport codes,” he said.
The event is expected to take place again next year in Outjo.
