MARIENTAL, 22 APR (NAMPA) //Kharas were crowned the 2019 Newspaper Cup champions on Monday following a 2-1 win over Otjozondjupa in the final at the Mariental Sports Fields.
//Kharas took the lead in the eighth minute when Heinrich Plaatjies snap shot on the turn caught Philipus Josef off guard in the near post to make it 1-0 in favour of //Kharas.
The southerners, who dominated the first half, failed to use their dominance as Otjozondjupa failed to test them in the first half.
Dandre Both had a speculative shot going way above the bar as he sought to extend his sides lead, while on the other end, Jovane Narib shot weakly at Fritz Narib.
Man of the match Simeon Namondi missed the target by a few centimetres, while Franklin Witbooi clipped the cross bar from a free kick leaving //Kharas with a 1-0 lead at half-time.
The second half began in a similar fashion as the first, with //Kharass Plaatjies once again looking to score as early as the fifth minute of resumption.
On the other end, Narib twice shot wide in an effort to level matters and Samuel Gamgoaseb skewing his shot from inside the 18 yard box.
Otjozondjupa started showing some urgency midway through the second half and were rewarded when substitute Ulipianus Ameb ran a through pass in the middle of the field and outran the //Kharas defence.
He released a powerful shot that beat the //Kharas goalkeeper all systems out to make it 1-1 in the 58th minute.
//Kharas then suffered a blow when Wilrich Afrikaner was taken off the field on a stretcher and later to hospital with suspected concussion following a serious head injury.
This seemed to motivate the //Kharas Region as they immediately took the lead when Namondis shot from the edge of the box made it 2-1 for //Kharas with nine minutes of the game remaining.
Otjozondjupa threw everything into attack but failed to find the equaliser as //Kharas celebrated their first-ever Newspaper Cup victory led by their governor, Lucia Basson.
In the third and fourth playoff match, Khomas Region beat Omaheke 4-1, with goals coming from Menthoulious Taseb (Omaheke) and Elderly Morgan, man of the match Godwin Eiseb (2) and Pitsi Jafta Eiseb (all Khomas).
