MARIENTAL, 20 APR (NAMPA) – The Mariental Urban Constituency on Saturday held a belated ceremony to celebrate the country’s 29th year of Independence.
Approximately 50 people attended the low-key event aside from the local authority councillors, and Mariental Urban Constituency Councillor, Nico Mugenga gave the keynote speech.
Mugenga said the celebration is all about giving gratitude to the fallen heroes of the liberation struggle.
“Today is all about saying thank you to the likes of Peter Nanyemba, Immanuel Shifidi, Founding President Sam Nujoma and President Hage Geingob for bringing us independence. Thank you PLAN (People’s Liberation Army of Namibia) fighters who bravely fought for our independence,” he said.
He added that the country’s independence should not be taken for granted.
“Our independence did not come easily and we should cherish and celebrate the day. We should sit back and enjoy and give thanks to people who bravely fought, for us to have a peaceful country.”
Meanwhile, former Mariental Urban Constituency councillor and Member of Parliament, Barakias Namwandi used the platform to urge the attendees to register and vote for Swapo and not for “puppet parties”.
“Register for the party we trust. Don’t vote for these funny parties like the Landless People’s Movement. Swapo is the only party we trust, the party that has brought us freedom,” he said.
