Hardap overpowers Kavango West at Newspaper Cup

MARIENTAL, 20 APR (NAMPA) – Host region Hardap dismantled an unfortunate Kavango West football side by a 7-1 scoreline in a one-sided match played at the Mariental Sports Field on Saturday morning.
Hardap scored four goals in the first 11 minutes before taking a halftime lead of 6-0 as Chris Jacobs scored four goals, while Marius Skrywer scored a brace.
Genivo Brendell scored the seventh goal in the second half to lead his side to a 7-0 scoreline midway through the second half and make sure his side goes on top of Group A.
Kavango West got their face-saver a minute from time when they won a penalty which Reino Haiyambo coolly slotted home.
Hardap’s Jacobs won the man of the match award.
In the second match of the day, Ohangwena produced the biggest upset of the 2019 Namibian Newspaper Cup tournament so far when they beat Erongo 2-0.
Ohangwena broke the deadlock via a penalty after Johannes Heita was illegally brought down in the box by Gilroy Bock.
Efraim Nestory made no mistake from the resultant free kick to make it 1-0 for the northerners.
Five minutes later, Heita brilliantly laid the ball into the path of Teofilus Heita who passed the ball into the back of the net to seal a shock 2-0 victory for his side.
Man of the match award went to Libolius Shaanika of Ohangwena.
The tournament which kicked off on Friday and will conclude on Monday continues to produce fireworks and keep the large crowds entertained.
All the 14 regions are represented in what is Namibia’s biggest youth football showpiece.
