MARIENTAL, 20 APR (NAMPA) – Four-time winners Khomas on Friday trashed a hapless Omusati regional Under-20 football team 4-1 to make a statement in the Newspaper Cup.
The annual youth tournament kicked off on Friday in Mariental where all 14 regions will vie for the prestigious trophies in the football and netball categories.
Khomas started the game like a house on fire and tested the Omusati goalkeeper as early as the sixth minute.
The team in gold and yellow put pressure on the rear guard of the Omusati defence and it was just a matter of time before they opened the scoring.
The goal came via the boot of Leyton Goliath much to the delight of the Khomas bench.
Khomas threw everything forward and their second goal came through the boot of man of the match, Godwin Eiseb to make it 2-0 going into halftime.
After the turnover Omusati scored to try and get back into game through Titus Kautsima, but Khomas replied with a goal through Gosbert Shikerete to stretch their lead by 3-1.
The gutsy Omusati started to run out of steam and enterprising forward Pitsi Amseb scored another goal to make it 4-1 and put the game beyond their opponent’s reach.
However, Omusati scored what seemed like a consolation goal when Titus Lyakeelelwa made it 4-2.
Speaking to Nampa after the match, Khomas coach Fortune #Eichab said they were wasteful in front of goal and could have won by a bigger margin.
“We came in the match to play football and we did just that. Our forwards were wasteful, but at the end we came out victorious,” said #Eichab.
