B1 ROAD, 19 APR (NAMPA) – A 51-year-old man died instantly on Friday when a vehicle he was travelling in overturned several times and burst into flames on the Okahandja-Otjiwarongo B1 road.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Detective Inspector, Ursula Mulongwane at the accident scene told Nampa that they are withholding the name of the deceased as his close relatives are yet to be informed.
Mulongwane said it is suspected that the 47-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to overturn five times before coming to a halt at about 08h25 on Friday morning.
“The vehicle burst into flames and burned the deceased beyond recognition,” she said.
The vehicle was travelling from the direction of Okahandja towards Otjiwarongo, and at about 61 kilometres south of Otjiwarongo it overturned.
The police officer said six occupants were travelling in the vehicle and five of them survived after they were pulled out from the burning vehicle by passerby motorists.
The survivors include two 12-year-olds, an eight-year-old, 14-year-old and the driver.
The five people sustained slight to serious injuries and were all taken to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital shortly after the incident.
A culpable homicide docket has been opened against the female driver at the Otjiwarongo Police Station.
Police investigations continue.
