//Kharas beat Zambezi in Newspaper Cup opener

MARIENTAL, 19 APR (NAMPA) – The //Kharas Region defeated their Zambezi counterparts by 4-3 in a highly entertaining opening match of the 2019 Namibian Newspaper Cup match at the Mariental Sports Field on Friday morning.
Zambezi were the first to threaten when Hans Mashiku blasted over the bar from the 18-yard box in the third minute.
//Kharas responded seven minutes later when Llewelyn Both scored from a free kick to put his side 1-0 ahead.
A minute later, Henrich Plaaitjies blasted wide, before Dandre Both tamely shot at the Zambezi goalkeeper.
In the 26th minute, Petrus Karab went on a solo run beating three Zambezi defenders before slotting home to make it 2-0 for his side.
Four minutes later, Dandre Both made in 3-0 for //Kharas when he tapped in an easy goal after the Zambezi defenders failed to clear a cross in their 18-yard box.
Both teams created half chances but failed to convert them and went to the break with the scoreline reading 3-0 in favour of //Kharas.
Second half was a different ball game as Zambezi reduced the deficit within three minutes of resumption through a powerful shot by Wise Liswaniso.
It was 3-2 on the 47th minute when Mashiku headed in for Zambezi.
With a raft of changes from both sides, the match slowed down with Zambezi doing all the attacking, but against the run of play //Kharas scored their fourth goal through Romario Kambindu to make it 4-2.
Zambezi refused to throw in the towel and scored their third goal through substitute Lynton Samunzula, which was the final piece of action as //Kharas emerged 4-3 winners.
The man of the match award went to //Kharas’ Karab.
The tournament kicked off on Friday and will conclude on Monday.
All the 14 regions are represented in what is Namibia’s biggest youth football showpiece.
