MARIENTAL, 19 APR (NAMPA) – The 18th edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup is underway in Mariental with all 14 regions to participate in football and netball over the course of four days.
The event that started on Friday and ends on Monday is arguably the biggest and most prestigious youth tournament in the country.
Speaking at the welcoming ceremony, Hardap Governor Esme Sophia Isaack said that sport is one of the fundamental tools that can be used by countries for nation building and enhancement of its people.
“Sport can be a vital tool to unite the Namibian nation, therefore let us all jealously safeguard our peace, stability and unity for the common good of all people,” she said.
She also had words of advice for the players and representatives of their regions.
“Even without formal education, you have the prestigious opportunity like this to change your living conditions and that of your family if you have discipline and are focused and goal driven,” she said.
Isaack encouraged all participants to compete in good faith.
“Sport does not build character, it reveals character, therefore go out and reveal your character. May the first among equals be the winner of this edition,” Isaack concluded.
