KEETMANSHOOP, 18 APR (NAMPA) – The //Kharas Region’s Under-20 football and netball teams on Thursday left for Mariental in the Hardap Region, where they will be competing in the 2019 edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup.
The tournament starts on Friday and ends Monday.
Briefing the teams before their departure, //Kharas Governor Lucia Basson wished them luck and encouraged them to play hard in order to bring the cup to the region.
“I do not believe in the saying that says ‘let the wining team win’, but let the //Kharas Region win, bring the cup back,” she urged.
Basson expressed that she has confidence in the teams as they comprise of the best players from the seven constituencies in the region.
“For the past years players were just selected randomly, but this year I have much confidence in these teams because we have the best from the whole region which were selected last year during the Governor’s Cup,” she added.
Basson said her region has never won The Namibian Newspaper Cup and called on the team to make history this year by bringing the cup home.
Speaking at an award ceremony on Wednesday, Keetmanshoop Mayor Gaudentia Kröhne urged the team to practice discipline on and off the pitch while respecting one another.
“You are going to represent this mighty region, so you should be disciplined; we don’t want to hear that those players from the //Kharas Region were misbehaving,” she encouraged.
The award ceremony was aimed at showing appreciation to those that made contributions to the teams while they were in training camp in preparation for the tournament.
